Some hidden / less famous features of Firefox 3
Some fun and productive features hidden within Firefox 3. Some of you all might have seen some of these before. If you know something cool on firefox do give me a shout using the comments section
1) Darn Robots
Just type about:robots in the address bar, thats right them robots have a plan!!! TIP: reload the page. While you are @ it also try about:mozilla.
2) Number of Suggestions in address bar
If you’re feeling like the number of suggestions is too high or too , adjust it to your liking.
- Enter about:config into the address bar and hit Enter.
- Press the “I’ll be carefull. I promise!” button. (Because you will be.)
- Enter browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in the Filter field to reach this preference.
To remove a mistyped URL from your suggestion list forever, key down to the suggestion and hit Delete on Windows or Shift+Delete on the Mac. This trick also works for any form auto-complete entry, like if you mistype a username into a login form.
3) handle mailto: links
Go to Tools -> Options -> Applications. type in mailto
Now you can select any option you require.
4) Keyboard shortcuts
Well these are not hidden but though I might those these in here as well. There are too many to list, but will list some of my favorite ones:
- Spacebar (page down)
- Shift-Spacebar (page up)
- Ctrl+F (find)
- Ctrl+T (new tab)
- Ctrl+K (go to search box)
- Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
- Ctrl-W (close tab)
- Alt-Home (go to home page)
- Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
- Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
- Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)
5) Auto-complete.
This is another keyboard shortcut. Go to the address bar and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “SaijoGeorge”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you to my homepage. For
.net – Shift-Enter
.org – Control-Shift-Enter
6) Smart Keyword
The smart keyword function allows you to create searches for any site with a search engine, and trigger the search from the address bar using your choice of keyword. Say you use IMDB title search a lot, there is a way to make life a bit easier for you without using the search plugin. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name lets say “imdb” and save it. Now, when you want to do an movie title search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “imdb” and the keyword you want to search for and hit enter. You can do this with any search box.
